XP PRO (and XP HOME too!)

To backup:

You use the Backup utility. Go to: START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > BACKUP. The wizard will launch, click next. Choose BACKUP FILES AND SETTINGS. Click next. Choose LET ME CHOOSE WHAT TO BACKUP. Click next. Expand the section for MY COMPUTER (click the minus sign next to it) and place a check mark in the box next to SYSTEM STATE DATA. Expand the C drive, Expand DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS, Expand YOUR NAME, Check FAVORITES, Check My DOCUMENTS, Expand LOCAL SETTINGS then APPLICATION DATA, Check the IDENTITIES box, Click next. Now choose a place to store the info and name it. Click next. At the next screen, most users should just click next. Advanced may want to choose a different type of backup by using the advanced tab.

To restore:

Go to: START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > BACKUP. The wizard will launch, click on the ADVANCED button. Click on the RESTORE WIZARD (Advanced) button. Click next on the following screen. Choose the backup you want. Click next and follow the remaining screens. You are done.

Install Microsoft Backup

If you’ve thought about backing up data on your system and gone through the steps to find the Backup utility in Windows 98/Me/XP, you may have some trouble finding it. A default Windows installation does not include Microsoft Backup, so you’ll need to install the software from your Windows Installation CD.

Win98 Installation

For you Win98 users who do not have Backup installed, insert your Windows CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive and click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click the Windows Setup tab, scroll down the Components list, and click the System Tools component to highlight it. If you see a gray checkbox with a check mark in it, this indicates that only some of the available System Tool utilities are installed. Click the Details button under the Description heading to launch the System Tools dialog box. Select the Backup checkbox in the Components list (it’s the first item on the list); a check mark appears, signifying Windows will install the Backup System Tool. Click OK, then click OK again to accept your changes. Win98 automatically locates the needed files in the Win98 CD and installs the program.

When installation is complete, Windows prompts you to restart your computer. Click Yes to restart your computer and complete the installation. You can verify the Backup utility installed correctly by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Backup.

WinMe Installation

Microsoft makes it a bit more difficult to install MS Backup in WinMe. The steps described above for Win98 don’t work with WinMe because Microsoft does not list Backup as a utility for installation to System Tools or any other program group listed in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box. However, you can install the Backup utility from the WinMe installation CD.

Insert the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive and close any automatically launched windows prompting you to install WinMe. Launch Windows Explorer, and click the plus sign (+) next to your CD drive’s icon in Explorer. Click the plus sign to expand the Add-Ons folder and click the Msbackup folder to highlight it. In the pane to the right you will see two files: Backup.txt and Msbexp.exe. Double-click Msbexp.exe to install the program. Next, restart your computer and complete the installation. You’ve now installed Backup in the System Tools menu.

WinXP Installation

Like WinMe, WinXP Home Edition does not include MS Backup with a default installation and also doesn’t list the program in the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box. Thus, to install MS Backup in WinXP Home, you must retrieve the installation file from the CD.

To install the Backup utility in WinXP Home, insert your Windows installation CD into your CD-ROM drive, close any automatically launched windows, and launch Windows Explorer. Browse to the CD drive’s icon in Explorer and click the plus sign to expand the folders. In the same fashion, expand the Valueadd and Msft folders and click the NTbackup folder to select it. The two files contained in NTbackup (Ntbackup.msi and Readme.txt) appear in the right pane of the Explorer window. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to install Backup and restart your computer to complete the installation. You can find Backup by clicking Start, All Programs, Accessories, and System Tools.

To use the cleaner, you need to copy the letter to be cleaned, and paste it into the cleaner program. You can either do this by doing a right click and select all, another right click and copy, then place your cursor in the cleaner body, do a right click and paste. If you prefer, you can do the same thru the "Edit" option at the toolbar.
Once in the cleaner, click on the "smiley face" and all the greater/lesser than goes away.
At this point, everything is highlighted, so you can immediately open a new message and place cursor in the body, and do a right click (or thru Edit) and Paste. If you have lost your highlighting, you can do so by typing F4 - or going to edit and select "copy all"
Be sure to check to see all unwanted material has not been transferred, such as footers and addresses of people previously emailed. If so, highlight and delete.
