Definition

If you do a Google search of “Web 2.0 Definition” you will get many hits. The one I like best is by Tim O’Reilly the founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media.

Web 2.0, according to Tim O'Reilly, is an "architecture of participation" -- a constellation made up of links between web applications that rival desktop applications, the blog publishing revolution and self-service advertising.

Tim O'Reilly is the founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media, Inc., thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world, and an activist for open standards.

Architecture of Participation

Before you start taking notes, this presentation/script and links are posted on the SCUG Web Site on the Program Notes page.

When we first started accessing the Internet with Web Browsers most all content was static. We typed a www address and were directed to a web page that had some kind of information; it was pretty much one way, retrieval only. It has now evolved into more of a two way street with many of the successful sites requiring user input as well as retrieval. These are just a few examples of sites requiring participation, can you name some more?

A constellation made up of links between web applications that rival desktop applications

The number of web applications that rival desktop applications is growing every day and if you have an always on broadband Internet connection it can be difficult to tell what is running from the desktop and what is running from the Web.
